In 2005 the first Houston Fisher House opened its doors and in 2013 a second Fisher House was added to the campus of the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC). As the needs increase, so do the houses, and a third Fisher House opened in 2017. The MEDVAMC is now the only VA Center to have three Fisher Houses. In addition to the ongoing treatment services at the MEDVAMC, other Houston facilities throughout the city’s vast medical complexes are treating active duty military members and veterans.
Dedicated to providing a free, temporary “home away from home” for military families, these spacious Houses offer gracious and fully functional living quarters for guests. The Houses range from 16,400 to 16,800 square feet and feature 20 to 21 private bedrooms and baths. Communal areas include a modern kitchen, spacious dining room, living room/library, playroom and laundry room. Other amenities include business centers, Wi-Fi, cable TV and linen services. Transportation is provided to shuttle guests from the Houses to the MEDVAMC. Whenever possible, we also offer donated lunches and dinners for our guests. The exterior areas include patios, picnic and barbecue areas and manicured landscapes.
Average stays are 9 to 14 days. As of 2018, Houston Fisher Houses have accommodated more than 14,000 military families at a savings of $12,240,000.00 in lodging expenses.
